BLOCKCHAIN / FIELD NOTE

Token ownership and application access are different questions

A token can provide evidence of ownership. Subscription rules still need an explicit application-level design.

A token-based product has at least two responsibilities: interpreting ownership information and deciding what that information means for the application.

Keeping those responsibilities separate makes access rules easier to review. It also prevents a technical integration from quietly becoming the entire product policy.

Define the entitlement

Before connecting a wallet, describe what a user is entitled to do. Is access permanent, time-limited, transferable, or tied to another account? Does holding more than one token change anything?

These are product decisions. Write them as plain-language examples that both developers and users can understand. A token balance by itself does not answer every question about a subscription.

Verify at the protected boundary

The interface can explain access and hide unavailable controls, but protected server operations must enforce the rules themselves. A browser display should not be the final authority for retrieving private content or performing privileged actions.

State which network, contract, and token identifiers are recognized. Treat an unavailable network response as an explicit error condition rather than guessing ownership. If results are cached, decide how long stale information can be accepted and explain that tradeoff.

Think through changes

Ownership and application state can change at different times. Design the behavior around transitions:

  • A user changes the connected wallet.
  • A token is transferred to another address.
  • The application cannot refresh its ownership check.
  • A previously valid entitlement expires under the product rules.
  • A payment or transaction remains unresolved.

The application needs a clear message for each state. Avoid presenting a pending action as a completed subscription.

Keep the integration reviewable

Separate wallet interaction, ownership lookup, and entitlement evaluation into identifiable parts. That structure makes it easier to test the product rules without requiring every test to interact with a live network.

Token integration is most useful when it supports a clear user experience. The engineering work includes explaining access, handling uncertainty, and enforcing the same rules consistently wherever protected operations occur.
